Things To Do In the Lake District

Looking for things to do in the Lake District? This wonderfully picturesque part of England has a wealth of interesting places to visit, from quaint hamlets to bustling market towns. The Lake District is also an excellent area for the outdoor enthusiast, with hundreds of carefully marked walks around the Lakes and Fells. There are a number of cruises on the Lakes and you can hire boats for fishing or simply for cruising the many Lakes in this beautiful area.

1. Brantwood

When looking for memorable things to do in the Lake District we suggest that a visit to Brantwood is in order. A fascinating museum, historic house and centre for the arts. Great for the whole family, there’s a wealth to explore and discover at the John Ruskin House. Meander your way around each room with stewards on hand to answer any questions.

2. Ullswater ‘Steamers

This award winning attraction has been established for over 150 years – becoming one of the most established cruise operators on the beautiful lake. Visitors are in for a treat with one of the largest fleets in the world. Enjoy some of the great walking routes as the cruises connect with these magical places. In spring, visitors can see unrivalled views of Wordsworth's Daffodils from the fantastic open deck and covered upper deck.

3. Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry

Learn all about the history of the Lake District by adding the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry to your itinerary. Immerse yourself and explore what’s going on with the Victorian farmer’s house and the other galleries on show that tell the story of the Arts and Crafts movement in the Lake District and the mighty industrial history of the region.

4. Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle is another family friendly attraction with so much to do and see during your visit. From the castle itself and the beautifully well-kept gardens, to the Hawk and Owl Centre. The Meadowvole Maze, Adventure Playgrounds and Enchanted Trail are perfect for exploration and getting some exercise. The Himalayan Gardens are a must see too. With a café and gift shop on the grounds as well, it’s a perfect attraction to visit during your next break.

5. Rydal Mount

Where William Wordsworth property laid his hat. The late great poet was born in these rural parts and left his mark all over the Lake District. Although he moved around Grasmere he settled in Ambleside. Venture to his residence, where he lived until his death in 1850. The Wordsworth home is to be discovered with the beuatfiul gardens and the general landscape.

6. The Lakes Distillery

Do you like gin, whisky and vodka? Well this is one of the best distilleries in the area to sample these great spirits made from local produce. Opened in 2014, it’s becoming one of the must go to attractions in Cumbria. From tours, tastings and a quaint wee restaurant to experience.

7. Lake Windermere

The largest natural lake in England is one of the best days out in the Lake District. Lake Windermere is a must when staying in this part of England. With amazing views and the opportunity to explore, climb and walk around Windermere, what’s stopping you? There is also the opportunity to try Lake Windermere cruises and self-drive boats.

8. Scafell Pike

Explore the highest point in England at Scafell Pike. Standing at 978m, it’s not for the faint hearted. It’s a tough journey and you may have sore feet when you reach the top but it’s worth it, with the unrivalled views of the National Park. Make sure you check ahead on the weather especially during the colder months and dress appropriately, especially in the footwear category.

9. Derwent Pencil Museum

A pencil museum might not be the most eye-catching or standout attractions that may come to mind when looking for things to do in the Lake District but this quirky museum is worth a thought and more. Sitting in the shadows of the ancient Cumberland Pencils Factory, this quaint building is home to the world’s first pencil. There are spy pencils from WW2 and much more to be discovered. There are also local artist’s workshops that are hosted weekly.

10. The World of Beatrix Potter

Near to Bowness ferry terminal is the magical tales and celebrated mischief of the World of Beatrix Potter. Immerse yourself in the history of the Lake District when you meet the likes of Peter Rabbit and his pals and learn why they’re an important part of the history of the Lake District. It’s perfect for the kids and the adults. Watch the introductory film and then venture to Jemima Puddle-duck’s woodland glade, look for carrots in Peter Rabbit’s Garden and much more

11. The Windermere Jetty Museum

Near to Bowness-on-Windermere is the Windermere Jetty Museum, an interesting attraction that houses an impressive collection of boats. There is a real heritage of boating in the area and the museum brings this history to life. Look forward to exhibitions of sailing yachts, motor boats and record breaking speed boats.
