Things to see & do in Biggar

The Royal Burgh of Biggar is a bustling market town with locally ran shops and a calendar of events throughout the year

The farming town of Biggar is situated between the Clyde Valley and Borders regions. Although it is in the countryside Biggar is only 12 miles from the M74 motorway.

Biggar has been a royal burgh since 1451, the town still retains its medieval layout. The main street, is a conservation area and is dotted with houses from the 17th to 19th centuries, and Biggar Kirk itself dates from 1545.

For being such a small town, there are many attractions to visit. One of the town’s main attractions is a world famous Victorian Puppet Theatre with a regular programme of quality shows. Other museums include the Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum and the Biggar Gasworks Museum, the only preserved gas works in Scotland.

A very popular yearly event is the Biggar Bonfire, an ancient custom that takes place on Hogmanay and dates back to pagan times.

For keen walkers, only six miles is the popular walk up Tinto Hill (2032 feet) which from the top offers stunning views over the Clyde Valley.
