Things to see & do in Lanark

Lanark is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, approximately 25 miles south-west of Glasgow in the heart of the Clyde Valley. It is one of Scotland's oldest Royal Burghs and was the seat of the first Scottish parliament in AD 978.

Lanark is still a bustling market town with many Victorian buildings and spires. It is one of the oldest royal burghs in Scotland, granted its royal charter in 1140 by King David I.

Lanark has strongly been linked the Wallace story, it is thought that in Lanark he may have got married, then later killed the English commander responsible for his wife's murder. The 18th century Church of St Nicholas is home to an 1882 statue of William Wallace. The town truly comes to life during the annual Lanark Lanimer celebrations in June, when the old burgh boundaries are checked and the Lanimer Queen is crowned.

There are many attractions to visit in Lanark. Nearby is the World Heritage Site of New Lanark,  the Falls of Clyde,  and the Scottish Wildlife Trust visitor centre.  A large boating lake, Lanark Loch, adjoins a golf course and the former racecourse, offering pony-trekking activities.
