Things to see & do in Stockport

Stockport is a former market town in Greater Manchester and lies on the River Mersey, approx 6 miles southeast of the city of Manchester.

Dominating the western approaches to the town is the impressive Stockport Viaduct (pictured above). Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry. The town also has an shopping precinct covering the Mersey.
