Things to see & do in Shaftesbury

Shaftesbury is one of the oldest and highest towns in England.

The beauty of the surrounding Dorset countryside is complemented by the collection of fine historical buildings that make up the centre of Shaftesbury itself. With a number of delightful Inns, restaurants and hotels, it has become a popular tourist destination for a relaxing family holiday or short break.

The town is the home of Gold Hill (made famous by the ‘Hovis’ advertisement as shown in the picture above) and has magnificent views over the Blackmore Vale.

Here are some of the sights to see in Shaftesbury;

Shaftesbury Abbey The excavated foundations of this once important and influential Abbey lie in a peaceful walled garden, with an extensive herb garden and medieval orchard. The museum brings to life the story of Saxon England’s foremost Benedictine nunnery, founded by King Alfred in 888AD.

Gold Hill Museum Shaftesbury and District’s local history museum with an award-winning cottage garden and wonderful views over Thomas Hardy’s Blackmore Vale.
