From the Crowne Plaza Plymouth you can explore Dartmoor National Park's wild, heather-covered moorland and peaceful wooded valleys on foot, by bike or on horseback. It's less than 20 minutes away by car. If that sounds too energetic, from March to October you can admire the view from a steam train on the South Devon Railway. For family fun, try letterboxing, which combines walking, hunting for treasure and solving puzzles.

If you get the urge to build sandcastles, surf or eat ice cream, several beaches are within an hour's drive of the hotel. Blackpool Sands is a peaceful shingle cove where you can swim, hire kayaks or eat organic food from the cafe. Challaborough Beach is sandy, with waves for bodyboarding and rock pools for the kids to explore. Picturesque Wembury Beach is closer, and you can get there by bus.

A mile and a half from the Crowne Plaza Plymouth hotel is the redeveloped Royal William Yard Harbour which is bursting with cafés, fashion boutiques, galleries and bars set in grand Victorian naval buildings. Hire a bike and pedal around the seafront, or catch the hourly ferry from the Barbican for city views from the water.

Get up close to fearsome sharks or glowing jellyfish at the National Marine Aquarium, 11 minutes' walk from the hotel. Watch out for elegant stingrays and turtles too, gliding through immense tanks that recreate coral reefs and the depths of the ocean. On the way back you can stop off at 18th-century lighthouse Smeaton's Tower. Climbing its steep steps will reward you with panoramic coastal views.

If you're at the seaside, a swim is a must. The restored Art Deco saltwater pool at Tinside Lido is open from May to September and a short walk across the Hoe from the hotel. While the kids play under the fountain, you can relax in a deckchair overlooking the sea. Feeling energetic? Try kayaking or paddle boarding at The Mount Batten Water Sports and Activities Centre, 20 minutes' drive away.
