Things to see and do while you staying at the Highland Hotel in Strathpeffer

Strathpeffer is a Victorian spa town in the Scottish Highlands, close to Ben Wyvis and surrounded by wooded hills. It’s an especially popular starting point for hill-walking, with viewing points such as Knock Farril, and the Heights – of Inchvannie, Keppoch, Fodderty and Brae. And, of course, there are many Lochs – including Achilty, Achonachie, Ussie and Garve – the sight of which always makes the climb worthwhile.

Discover the story of Strathpeffer and its development through the years. It is run by volunteers from the sweet shop, where you can pick up traditional treats and handmade chocolates.

Highland Museum of Childhood, 300 metres
An amazing collection of toys and treasures at this quaint attraction in the old railway station, with gift shops and a café serving traditional Scottish treats.

Touchstone Maze, 0.5 mile
This incredible maze is a network of paths riddled with stones that date back millions of years, from different ages and regions of Scotland. From the maze, you could continue your day out up to Knockfarrel, an Iron Age fort with spectacular views, or wander back through Blackmuir Wood with views of Ben Wyvis.

Strathpeffer Golf Course, 0.5 mile
This spectacular golf course offers stunning panoramic views to the Cromarty Firth and Fannich Hills. It was extended from 9 to 18 holes by the Grand Old Man of Golf, Tom Morris (1821-1908).

Castle Leod, 1 mile
The oldest intact castle in Britain is the Seat of Clan Mackenzie, was built around the 12th century, and extensively remodelled around 1606. Please note it is only open at certain times the year.

RSPB Scotland Tollie Red Kites Nature Reserves, 3 miles
Stunning views across Easter Ross to Ben Wyvis and close-up views of Tollie Red Kites when RSPB volunteers feed the birds from a specially-converted farmstead building on the Brahan Estate.

Rogie Falls, 4.6 miles
You approach this amazing waterfall via a new suspension bridge across the Black Water River. During August and September you may see wild salmon leaping upstream. If there’s been heavy rainfall or snow, the water pouring off Ben Wyvis makes the waterfall even more impressive.

Unexplored Scotland multi-activity centre, 8.5 miles
Come and try kayaking, navigation, white water rafting and hill-walking tours at the Unexplored Scotland centre at Garve close to the Highland Hotel.

Inverness, 20 miles
The cultural capital of the Highlands where the Rivers Ness and Moray Firth meet. The Old Town features the 19th century cathedral, the Old High Church and an indoor market selling local food, clothing and craft products. The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery tells the unique story of the city and the Scottish Highlands.

Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition and Loch Ness Cruises 24 miles
Come and find the truth about Loch Ness, one of Scotland’s most famous sites. Why not take a cruise round the lake, and visit one of the shops selling Nessie items, kilts, cashmere, woollens and whisky.
