Nine miles from the hotel, Silchester is home to the ruins of a large Roman town known as Calleva Atrebatum. Visit year-round to discover the history of the site, built on an Iron Age village in the 1st century AD and mysteriously abandoned in the 6th or 7th century. You can walk 1.5 miles around the city walls, some of the best preserved in Britain, and marvel at the nearby Roman amphitheatre
Peacocks roam freely through the grounds of Beale Park, set alongside the Thames in Lower Basildon, 12 miles from the hotel. Wander through themed aviaries housing rare and exotic birds, from flamingos to peafowl, and see mongooses, lemurs and more in the mammal enclosures. You can picnic in the deer park or ride the one-mile miniature railway, and there are also kids' play areas and a petting zoo.
About 20 miles east of the hotel you'll find the grand Windsor Castle. Now a weekend residence of Elizabeth II, it's been used by British monarchs for millennia. Attend a service at St. George's Chapel, the resting place of royals like Henry VIII and the Queen Mother. Tour the precincts and the sumptuous State Apartments, and if the Queen is visiting, you can see the ritual Changing of the Guard.
In neighbouring Twyford, a 20-minute drive from the hotel, the Binghams microbrewery has won awards for its inventive brews since it opened in 2010. Bingham's beers have proved popular in Berkshire, and you'll find them on tap at many local pubs and festivals. Take a tour of the premises to learn about the brewing process. You'll be treated to tastings and can even bring a cask home with you.
