The Castletown Hotel near Thurso is owned and run by two local brothers Andrew and Sandy Mackay. The brothers pride themselves on offering traditional hospitality with comfortable accommodations and good home cooking.

The Castletown Hotel is located in the small village of Castletown and provides an ideal place to stay for those touring Caithness and visiting its many attractions. The hotel also acts as a good stopover point for those travelling to the Orkney Islands. The Castletown Hotel is 8 miles from the Castle of Mey - this was one of the former homes of the Queen Mother and is occasionally used by Prince Charles.

This hotel in the North Highlands of Scotland has 24 en-suite bedrooms and promises to offer a comfortable cosy night's sleep during your stay.

The Castletown Hotel’s owner Sandy utilises his skills in the kitchen and produces delicious home-cooked fayre. He prides himself in using local produce where possible for his dishes to ensure quality and freshness. Being an ex-butcher,

Sandy understands meat. He buys the Aberdeen Angus from his cousin Willie Mackay’s farm in Ackergill, Caithness and prepares it for our guests to enjoy.

Dinner is served from 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Breakfast is served from 7am - 9am

The Castletown Hotel is situated in the small village of Castletown which is within 5 minutes' driving distance from Thurso. Wick, Wick Airport and John o’Groats can all be reached within 20 minutes from the Castletown Hotel.

The hotel is located on the main bus route to and from Inverness, and just 15 minutes from the two car ferry ports at Gills Bay and Scrabster.

This area is one of the UK's top fishing areas, you can catch bass from the beach and cod on the bay. Fishing tackle, boat hire and permits for loch fishing are available from the Castletown Hotel.


The Castletown Hotel is also 1/4 of a mile away from Dunnet Bay, which is Scotland's finest surfing beach.

Wick Golf Club - There are many different golf courses to make the most of. All of which are thoroughly enjoyed by both tourists and locals.

Diving - Diving in Caithness is available throughout the year. It is known to have some of the finest diving areas in the UK, particularly the popular scenic and wreck sites.

Kayaking - The Pentland Canoe Club is based in Thurso, where the club enjoys most forms of paddling due to the Caithness environment. Kayaking is a very popular activity and is also available in Wick.

Climbing - The most frequented areas are Latheronwheel and Mid Clyth, however, there are other lesser-known areas to climb such as Sarclet, Occumster, and Noss, amongst others. Most climbing points are found in the SMC guide to Northern Highlands.

Surfing - The world-famous reef break at Thurso East has become popular with surfers from all over the world. It is a sparsely populated area, meaning there is a good chance you will be surfing by yourself, or maybe even with a few seals.
