Rooms are very tired , paper hanging off walls , cracks in the ceiling and on coving , toilet radiator was held together with gaffer tape , nosiest floorboard I have ever experienced , reception staff we're either posted missing or just very uninterested. I know they have been doing work as scaffolding was erected on outside of building and bar area had been done and was lovely but rest of building is terrible. Breakfast was excellent and that was the only shining light and thankfully we only stayed the 1 night. Location is good but I would avoid this place until further refurbishments have been carried out and by the state of things this could take some time. I am not normally one to complain but I was very disappointed with the state of the hotel , this was a present and unfortunately we picked here for our stay.

The staff were all nice and friendly but the hotel badly needs updated. Bedroom carpet badly stained, windows need replaced and big gap under the bedroom door.

A very disappointing stay! The public areas were very cold, meals served in the bar! Everyone eating their meal wearing coats to keep warm! 4 small electric oil radiators to hear the bar area. On the plus side the two girls serving the meals were very efficient, trying to serve meals and tend to the bar!The room was warm ,so we spent our evening in the room and not in the bar!

Room was nice. Better than expected. This hotel charges £10 per night for RESIDENTS, who are already paying to be there That's £70 per week. I dint like being ripped off. The previous two nights in a hotel near Fort William was as it should be. Free.

This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Building was in a very poor state inside and out. Breakfast was cold. Room was shabby and very basic. Lift out of order. Many other unhappy guests complaining about various issues which are longstanding. I am disappointed that this hotel is on any booking website as it creates a very bad impression for visitors to the area. Would not recommend!

Hotel sadly in need of refurbishment, very run down, Apart from receptionists staff have a couldn’t care less attitude which doesn’t bear well for the hotel either. Hope new owners take this on board. Good choice in well presented breakfast buffet but cold cooked food was disappointing

Have stayed at the Great Western Hotel before but sadly feel the service has went downhill since our last visit. It took 5 days on and off of emails and trying to phone to book a dinner reservation. Appeared to be short staffed, barman was running between the bar and restaurant so at times the bar was unstaffed. Left card out for room to be serviced and returned hours later to find it hadn’t even though there was housekeeping staff in corridor when we left plus our room door had been opened and left ajar, reported same to reception staff who were friendly and accommodating who said it would be passed onto manger. It’s a shame, I think they need more staff to accommodate high season.

Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful but unfortunately the hotel is very dated. Had a sea view room but the windows were very old and had gaps so every noise from outside could be heard. Stayed 2 nights but it was 2 nights of very disturbed sleep when closing time at the local pub. Room was basic. Bathroom was dirty, towels had holes, felt unhygienic in Bathroom. Food was okay but again basic. You have to pay £6 a day for the privilege of parking at the hotel, it was car park wars and a total chaos. I would not recommend this hotel to family and friends and will not be returning. Myhotelbreak, please do not recommend sea view rooms and clearly advise on car park charges.

The location was great within walking distance of the main town. We had a room with a sea view. The room was spacious and cosy, beds were comfy and the view was great , although the weather did help a lot Staff were very friendly and helpful Parking at the hotel was good, even at £6 for the night The hotel is very dated and rundown - lots of TLC required The lift is tiny but does the job

Just back from a 2 night stay, and we had a great time. Riley greeted us with a very warm welcome, was happy to share her knowledge of the area and recommended a great Italian restaurant when we asked. Every morning we got the same cheery smile. Didn't get the name of the young man behind the bar but again he was lovely, nothing would have been too much trouble for either of them. Yes, the hotel is very old but that's just part of the charm. It was very clean and comfortable and the views are outstanding. Breakfast was average, table service on first morning and buffet style this morning. Can't wait to return and would happily recommend to family and friends

This hotel was perfect t for us staying before heading off to the islands, yes it’s slightly dated but you pay for what you get and can’t moan at this great comfy beds, good shower, beautiful sea views and ruridgh on devotion was just a star. He was so accommodating as was the lady on during the day that spoke to on check out but didn’t get her name, we were unlucky to not get off the island and without question they rescheduled our booking also, I see all the negative reviews but this was excellent value for money and really accommodating nice staff.

We stayed with our wee dog, room was nice with fantastic views over Oban bay and town. Staff are fantastic, really helpful and friendly, food was lovely especially the fish ? , the hotel itself could do with a upgrade, its very clean, but carpets and a paint job is needed, apart from that it is a lovely hotel and we will definitely come back.

We stayed Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd December 2024 as a last minute decision to travel to Oban . The room rate was excellent so our expectations were low . On arrival you see the hotel is in need of redecorating in the reception and public areas . The lift to the rooms is the smallest life we have ever been in which added to our enjoyment. Our room 230 was clean , dog friendly and very quiet . The bed was comfy , clean and the room was huge . The bathroom is very dated but was clean . We spoke to staff and found them helpful friendly and welcoming . The views from the bar area over Oban bay are outstanding. Yes the hotel could do with upgrading but if you’re looking for a friendly , central hotel , which is clean and has stunning views , the great western is worth every penny . Parking is an additional £6 overnight . We would stay here again providing the room rate reflected the standards expected .

Just home from a two-night stay at this hotel. Upon arrival, you’re met with this big, grand white hotel overlooking the bay. It really is in the perfect location, within a 5-min walk to the town centre. We were greeted by Riley the receptionist, who is literally in a job that was made for her. Very bubbly, friendly and knowledgeable. Nothing was too much bother for her and always had a smile on her face. We arrived before 3pm, so our room wasn’t quite ready, so Riley showed us the way to the hotel bar, where we could sit, relax and watch the world go by from the massive windows overlooking the bay until our room was ready. Here, we met Connor the bar man and just like Riley, in a job that is made for him. We were greeted with a friendly, cheery lad who went above and beyond his role as barman to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Nothing was too much trouble! Yes, the hotel is dated and needing a wee bit of an uplift, which we know is work in progress. But the rooms were clean and the bed was comfy. But the selling point at this hotel, has to be the staff - every single one of them made us feel welcome and are an absolute credit to the Bespoke company. You should be proud of your workforce, and we will return due to them.

I did not review this hotel prior to booking so that is my fault.I have never been to a hotel and felt the need to leave a negative review..but for future visitors i felt i should. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the fab views. The hotel is so substandard from the carpets to the walls to the windows.Everything was so badly worn.It doesn't just need decorated it needs a total refurb. On the 1st night the fire alarm went off about 12.15 and everybody duly left the hotel. No fire engine's arrived and the staff were telling everybody to go back in as it PROBABLY a false alarm. Breakfast on the Sunday...shambolic. On the Monday not just as bad as there seemed to be someone actually in charge however you could sense the tension with the staff.Ive never seen so many people openly complaining and discussing how bad this hotel is. Oban itself is lovely and we will return..just not to the Great Western.

Hotel location and experience was excellent. . Had a free upgrade to a Superior Double Room. Many thanks to the staff. Very clean and also very pleasant staff. Food was top notch for me and my wife. Room had slightly outdated furniture but overall really can't complain. Close to all amenities.

Having used this hotel on numerous occasions and having paid a premium for a sea view room, I was a bit disappointed with our room or to be precise the ensuite. The toilet itself was under the outside stairs going up to the next floor so you banged your head on the wall when you used it, I have paid less and had a better room even though there was no sea view, on the plus side the room was clean, the evening meal was as good as I remember and the breakfast was really good and plenty of it, the staff were extremely pleasant. I will go back to this hotel as one not so good experience won't put me off.
