What a gem .. fabulous stay .. staff amazing, so friendly with nothing too much trouble. Restaurant atmospheric food superb. Our room clean, comfy. Over all no negatives at all, we will definitely stay again.

The evening meal was first class, excellent choices and superb service. The rooms outside the main hotel and the breakfast needed some work, little disappointing.

We enjoyed the meal on our first night. On day 2 we returned to the hotel at 6.30pm and were told that no food was available as we hadn’t booked. A sandwich, bowl of soup would have sufficed but were told we would have to eat elsewhere - had to get back in car and travel 5 miles to nearest restaurant- very disappointing! Had problems with our tv and the manager said this was a constant problem - should have been rectified. Room was rather dated but ok for the price we paid. Breakfast service excellent - evening staff clearly new/untrained.

Very nice stay at the Merritt. Was in one of the out house cottage type rooms. Really cosy and comfy. Going back to the hotel I would certainly request the outhouses again.

The hotel staff were very courteous, friendly and happy to help. I arrived pretty late on my first night, the duty nanager could not have been more friendly and accommodating, even asked if required assistance with any baggage, politely declined. Presented with a lovely spacious room ,you could tell it had been freshly redecorated, great stylish curtains with matching cushions and a lovely bench by main window, where my cat loved sleeping. Lovely bathroom, big fluffy towels and luxury English toiletries...smelled devine. Beautiful ornate four poster bed ,sitting area, quality fixtures and fittings. Beautiful new bath with shower attachment plus a separate shower cubicle.Dont think I've had the pleasure of such a large bathroom. Great powerful shower, great to wake you up. Minor things which let down overall aesthetics of the room, limescale/ black mould around the bottom of shower cubicle the discoloured strips surrounding the cubicle door. Actually forgot to mention to hotel staff the shower and whb took a while to drain away. These points may be minor, however should make sure completely clean for guests . New flooring in bathroom set off the bathroom beautifully. A horrible ill fitted and stained carpet in the bedroom took look away from room. Beautifully decorated and inviting restaurant where tables were well spaced where I sampled breakfast. A tasty buffet was on offer or could have a few choices of cooked to order requests eg.eggs benedict ,eggs royal porridge etc... Pretty humid weather when visited hotel, window opened near the cooked buffet area, where flies congregated...the brekkie items really should have had covers over them...an electric fly killer would gave been a good piece of kit. Great pot of tea and toast made to order. Had dinner in bar area, slight mix in in order brought starter and main same time?? Fairly hefty prices... almost £15 alone for the burger, fries and salad although portions good size. If honest food at dinner could be improved, £25 amount to order up to, just about covers 2 courses,if having dinner in Gilroys restaurant would have course set menu. Hotel had lovely gardens and a decent bar area.. love the pet friendly aspect. Good for walks around hotel, designated pathways. Beautiful part of County Durham and approx 10 mins to main town of Barnard Castle. Worn-out mat at front door, could also do with being renewed. To me takes away from the beautiful, elegant hotel frontage .

We booked 2 rooms for 4 friends on a spa break deal. Both rooms were clean and pleasant, beautiful toiletries provided. The treatments were excellent in the spa and our only criticism was the odd afternoon tea which came with abundant pastries and frozen mini magnums !!The young staff were all pleasant and tried hard to accommodate any requests, in particular Isha was friendly polite and helpful. Overall impression was that hotel was quirky and needed some attention to lighting in all public areas but we had an enjoyable stay for a reasonable price.

I cannot fault the staff. The room was comfortable and clean and had the features of an old building. Excellent value for money.

All the staff we met - or even passed around the hotel - were friendly + welcoming, and made us feel very comfortable. Breakfast (help yourself buffet) was good, though not exceptional. Everything clean and working. Parking good.

Lovely spot and easy to find. We stopped overnight as we travelled from Essex and we were on our way to Scotland. Having our dog was no problem to this hotel and this is what made it so great for us. We ate our evening meal and breakfast in the bar area as we had our dog. Room was clean and warm and very welcoming. Had a long hot bath after our long journey. Staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We asked for more milk and they got us a little jug to take to our room. We will def stay again as a stop over. Great value for money.

Friendly staff, good food, warm comfortable bedroom, the hotel had character. The location was quiet but not far from places of interest and good road networks.
