Yet another great break at this lovely hotel with very friendly staff and lovely meals, we were at Neil Diamond tribute night which was superb with a great act, fabulous DJ and of course more friendly locals. Special mention to manager Ian and his lovely deputy Helen not forgetting Mo the barman as well as reception and catering staff especially the chefs? As the saying goes credit to the team who run this lovely hotel. We’ll be back soon

I remembered NWC Hotel as being a social and welcoming place years ago. This was the main reason why I chose here. But not if you have your dog with you! It says it’s a dog friendly hotel - oh no it’s not! Dogs are not allowed anywhere except in your room. This literally means from your car to your room. We had dinner on the first night in a large cold room on our own, no atmosphere. We then ventured into a room off the lobby where we thought we could have a drink. (Dogs not allowed in the bar) but no, we were told ‘no dogs allowed here’ we were shrugging our shoulders and saying goodbye to the couple we were chatting to when Mr Donnachie appeared and told us, no dogs allowed here, if we don’t move, we would have to leave the hotel! I was gobed! I’ve never been spoken to in that manner in any hotel before. This is obviously a not dog friendly hotel and, that’s entirely up to the hotel but please don’t say it’s dog friendly. The member of staff who stood out and went over and above her duties and was kind and helpful was Yvonne, she was lovely, Mr Donnachie (the manager) needs to take a leaf out of her book.

This is a great hotel, the staff are very pleasant and friendly. The food is excellent and has a varied menu. There is a games room and swimming pool and sauna. Lots to do without going out in the rain. Would definitely recommend you stay there. It has a long history to explore if you’re interested. Will be going back again soon.

Staff welcoming on arrival when checking in which was very quick and easy. Hotel room was very large, bathroom outdated but room and bathroom clean and tidy. We are in restaurant both nights as well as having drinks in the bar where service was attentive and food very tasty. Breakfast both mornings went down nicely, buffet could be better with more variety.

We had a lovely stay at the hotel and the food was really lovely. Alcohol was a bit pricey but as we are not big drinkers we accepted that. The staff were lovely and very helpful and so we would not hesitate to recommend it.

Very pleasant staff. Meal in restaurant was excellent. Room very clean. Hotel furnishings slightly outdated but it is an older hotel so not out of place.

Room was possibly the worst I’ve ever stayed in. Really dated furniture and toilet Room was cold only one radiator working no the following morning I do wonder had I booked direct with the hotel if we would have received a better room, perhaps the discount given by my hotel means you are given rooms that are not as nice

The Hotel was absolutely spotless and a well maintained inside decor I like old fashioned but in great condition… one complaint was our room was absolutely freezing no double glassing and one small radiator…the window was actually blowing back and forward with the wind….Dinner was lovely, well presented and served well by the staff…the breakfast not so good … Lorna Gilluley

We had a great time at North West Castle Hotel in Stranraer. Our room was huge with a great view over Loch Ryan. Without exception the staff at the hotel were friendly and professional at all times. The food in the restaurant was excellent and there were plenty of options available. Overall, the hotel was great value snd we will definitely consider coming back at some point in the future.

We booked the North west Castle for 2 nights. We decided to have dinner on the first night, having read reviews on the food we were looking forward to it. We ordered soup and a prawn tail to start, soup was fine, the prawn tail came served with a small salad garnish and some brown bread and butter, there was a mound of sauce on the plate with a total of 7, not very large with the largest being about 1.5cm, prawns. For the price of £6.95 I would have expected more, I did tell a member of the waiting staff that I was unhappy with this, my plate was taken away and the charge removed, no offer of another starter or any apology for that matter. Main course we opted for haddock and chips, this was ok but nothing to shout about. Breakfast, well the hotel had 2 coach parties in and this showed. Breakfast is self serve for juices, cereals, toast etc and cooked is table served, and as they were so busy we didn’t expect to have our breakfast cooked to order, but surely the eggs could have been. It was obvious that the costs were being kept in check as the portions at breakfast are what I’d expect for coach party servings, and one portion of butter per person (we did ask for more and this was brought) but we paid a good price for our room and would have expected more. The second morning I ordered poached eggs, they came out of the kitchen 5 mins after I ordered them and were rock hard and inedible…proof they were precooked!! Our room was clean and comfortable, however there is no servicing of rooms unless you specifically put a sign on the outside of your door or ask reception for it to be done. The hotel itself is very dated in every area and is in much need of a complete update, especially the swimming pool area, which is not a pleasant place to be in and seems to be used as a storage area. Unfortunately we don’t see ourselves returning to the North West Castle Hotel, and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Enjoyed our stay had a double room with balcony and it was big. Bed comfortable and the weekend was quiet and relaxing, breakfast was nice and staff very helpful, pool sauna and games room were fun and the decor was very old fashioned and fitting of the surroundings, we will definitely be back. We'll done.

Unfortunately not a great experience. The hotel itself was a reasonable standard, nicely furnished. We checked in and they confirmed our tariff was B&B plus £30 voucher for food and drink. We were given our key (room 67), and booked a table for dinner at 6pm. The room was a good size, and clean, however the bathroom could do with refurbishment. Later we went for dinner, and that's where the problems started. We were shown to our table. The only menu on the table appeared to be for a 3-course dinner inclusive stay. We pointed out to staff member that we were on the £30 voucher tariff and that we should have a different menu. She went to check her sheet, and said we were down for dinner inclusive rate. Again we said that was wrong, and she went to check direct with reception staff, and they told her we were definitely dinner-inclusive. On that basis, no other menu was offered to us, so we ordered from the 3-course menu which had no prices (neither individual courses, nor overall price for 3 courses). We both ordered starters and mains - and my wife also had a dessert. However, as we were finishing, another member of staff came over to ask us to confirm our surname. Then the first member of staff came and told us we had the wrong menu after all and that we would probably need to pay the excess above £30! Turns out we had been given the wrong room when we checked in! We immediately went to reception to complain about this, as were left feeling that it had been our fault, but instead of sorting it out there and then, she could only say she would inform the manager, and we were left hanging until checking out the next morning to find out that no extra charges had been added. This put a dampener on the whole weekend. I also need to mention the breakfast - apart from the coffee, nothing good to say about it I'm afraid. The bacon and tomato was dried up. I assume the slice of haggis had been grilled/heated on top of the slice of black pudding, as the hidden part of the black pudding was barely cooked. My wife's poached egg was more like a hard boiled egg on toast, and contained pieces of shell, so she couldn't finish it. When the plate was cleared away, she told the staff member about the eggshell, wasn't even offered an alternative, and just told they would let "him" know! Never experienced such poor customer service in many years.

Very good value break. Food excellent, room spacious and comfortable. Staff very attentive and helpful. Leisure facilities a little dated but very well maintained. Room service breakfast was missing a sausage and we didn't know which pot had the decaf coffee.

Dinner service good great food good value. Breakfast service could be better waiting to be served while staff prepare tables for dinner. Only 2 portions of butter on the table having to ask for more especially when guest have to make their own toast.

Excellent value for money, good room, good location and friend;y staff and reasonably priced food and drink. Wou;d recommend paying the extra for the food package as almost all restaurants in Stranraer are closed Monday/Tuesday. A great location for touring the Galloway countryside well worth a visit
