First night we were awakened at 4am by the fire alarm going off.. stood about in reception for 20 minutes to be told that it was a faulty detector and to go back to bed. No apology from anyone. The hotel was a bit tired, could do with a complete makeover, however the staff were really friendly and meal times were a pleasure with the service received plus a bottle of wine on first night, The overall cost was really great and we had a lovely 2 nights with a trip on the Lake Windermere as part of the package, I would happily visit this hotel again.

We had a lovely relaxed stay at this hotel. We were in the Old Bath House as we had our dog - it was warm and cosy with the little beck running along outside our bedroom window. There is a lovely walk through the trees with red squirrels in abundance - a rare treat! We sat beside the log fire in the hotel before our dinner. The food was good but because the hotel was quiet the dining room felt too empty and big - it would have been better part screened off. However breakfast was really good and daylight changed the mood of the room! The hotel is in a quiet remote area and is perfect for a relaxing break. We thoroughly enjoyed our break here and would recommend it to anyone wanting to get away from it all! The only thing I would have seriously changed is the dog friendly Fell Bar which is the only public room available to sit with a dog and have a drink - too remote and and it felt unwelcoming - a room just off the main area would have felt better although I do respect hotel policy.

Dissapointed from arriving as was overcharged more than our total conformation was. The room was comfortable but had broken sleep as the bed had seen better days and could do with renewing. Dinner and service was appalling no order and wrong meals brought to table not just ours but others also staff could be more happy and aproachable. Breakfast was fine due to it being self service. It was also a 1940s theme night which was reflected on the dinner menu had we known we wouldn't of booked. Great location for walking lovely hotel just staff let it down try sending them on a hospitality course

The staff could not be more attentive and service was excellent. On the Saay night the hotel was buzzing due to a 70's/80's event. The hotel was bursting at the seams with guest and the service was as per the previous evening. We joined in with the event after they had finished their refreshments and had a fantastic evening. The surrounding land is beautiful, using the hotel pamphlet guides for the walks we took the waterfall direction which was enjoyable. The hotel itself is an old building and has many original features with historical photos in the foyer, a fabulous building. I would definitely stay again and would like to explore the building and surrounding countryside more.

Stayed one night on 1st jan. For the price we paid it was fine. There was a coach party staying for the new year so it was mostly older guests. We stayed in room 105 which seemed quite small but didnt see other rooms to compare. The room was adequate for our needs overall however the mattress desperately needs replacing, my partner had a poor nights sleep as you could feel the springs in the mattress. Some areas of the room could benefit from some deep cleaning such as the tv remote which was quite dirty as were the bath handles where they attach to the bath. The only light in the bathroom did not work correctly and we didnt feel the need to report this at 10.30pm and hope that these points might be picked up on a housekeepers room inspections. Dinner was ok but not memorable and seemed to suit the coach residents. Breakfast again was ok. Overall the majority of staff were friendly and seemed eager to please which was a definite plus point. The morning of departure saw staff members sat in the corridor waiting to service rooms. They knocked on our door at 9am. When we left around 10am they again were eager to get in our room and although this wasn't particularly a problem to us I could see how some guests may feel rushed to leave. In summary I would say the experience was ok for the price paid but there wasn't anything to make me particularly want to rush back. May I also add that I worked as a hotel manager for numerous years and that this review is written with a basic understanding of how the hospitality industry operates.

This was our second visit to Shap Wells. It is a good base to visit some lovely places in Yorkshire, Lancashire, bria and the Lake District or even the Scottish Borders. The deal we had was great value and the food was good. However, if I stay again I would prefer a room in a different location as 120 seems to get some noise from the kitchen or dining room, perhaps from either the air con units or fridges.

We had an upgraded room, but was like the standard room you would get in most hotels, but it was comfortable, there were no bathroom accessories as standard, which is fine if you know in advance. Serving staff seemed a little like 'bunnies in the headlights' bringing food out and not knowing who had ordered it! They were however, pleasant and tried their best, they just seemed to lack leadership.

Hotel a gem.interesting stained glass, plenty of sitting areas sand a wonderful dining room. The bedroom and bathroom were immaculate with good be and bedding and really good lighting over bed. The staff are amazing, always helpful , smiling and acknowledging. They and their management should be complimented. The only downside was the dinner., too much food and overcooked. Three chops one too many and four pieces of salmon likewise. The vegetables on the other hand were perfectly cooked. The puddings were cold , even the crumble and apple tart . Someone should review the catering although the breakfasts were properly cooked. The squirrel sanctuary is a therapy in itself and the local walks fine. Shap Abbey was a real find. Walks at Haweswater with the RSPB facility for the eagle a real treat and no crowds even at peak season week end. So we will return and recommend to friends with the proviso only on a B and B basis until they review the dinners.

Apart from some dirty marks around the bath beneath the shower head which really is unsightly everything else was fine.

We had a nice stay at the shapwell hotel but unfotrunately the location for us was too sucluded although beautiful scenery to be had. The hotel itself is ok but in need of a bit of tendercare in certain areas. Ok for a one night or two at most more than that it gets too boring

out of all the hotels ive stayed in this is the first time I have come across both draught lagers unavailable with no explatotion given .it also takes over from my 1990s satay at the arrocher hotel as the worst bed I have ever slept in apart from that the food and the staff were nice
