Nice hotel, lovely squirrels, but not all great. We were staying with a guide dog, and Classic Britain asked whether we'd prefer the main hotel or the Bath House annex. We asked for the main hotel, but this was ignored when we arrived and we were put in the annex. Breakfast staff didn't take consideration of our ability to follow through narrow gaps in the busy dining room, and seemed unaware of rules not to interact with a working guide dog in a place where people are eating. Shower pump in room was intermittent, uncomfortable and difficult to use. Parking was somewhat chaotic, without clearly marked spaces or access areas. Reception staff seemed unaware of the exceptional situation relating to assistance dogs, which should be allowed anywhere that guests are permitted. The hotel was reasonably well presented, with lovely grounds and it was a delight to discover the wealth of Red Squirrels running wild in the woods.

A great place to unwind and relax. A remote location but well placed to visit great places like the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Service could be a bit slow at times in the restaurant but it wasn't really an issue. The staff were pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed our stay.

Stayed for one night on way to Edinburgh. A very pleasant stay in a lovely remote location but still only 5 minutes from the motorway. Would stay there again.

Little things would have made all the difference to our stay - receptionist wasn't that welcoming, even sighed out loud as she got up from her chair, code for wifi use, you need one code PER DEVICE, with kids we had 4 devices. When collecting first code, it would have been helpful to have been informed of that. Then we were asked to retrieve them from reception. It would have been good cust service if they had delivered to our room. Heating - room was unheated on our arrival - then heating went of at 10:30-06:00am we were FREEZING all night!! They use a cotton sheet and a thin micro fleece as bedding!! We all slept together to keep warm. At

Very enjoyable stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and warm. The afternoonTea presentation was a bit unusual but very tasty. Meals were value for money. The only disappointment was the shortness of the nearby walks, but then the hotel would make an ideal base to travel further afield to find the ideal walks . The whole experience was excellent value for money.

Another great stay at Shap. We were not disappointed and there was a sense of coming home, which was nice. The food and service is always good and we had a lovely relaxing morning working to the sound of the stream outside our window.

The hotel is a bit old fashioned and the bedrooms could be doing with a refurb. especially the bathrooms but the food and service are excellent and very good value when booked through Classic Britain.

The Hotel was very good. However I felt the service in the Dining room was very dis-organised. The waiting staff although very pleasant took each tables order at a time, and still managed to get our order wrong. At breakfast I had ordered poached haddock the day before. The following morning I waited 30 mins., despite several reminders and ended up canceling as we were leaving that day. The food was very good but there needs to be more attention paid to the service side.

A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting & it's location is perfect for visiting either the northern or the southern lakes. Our room was clean, spacious warm & comfortable & decorated beautifully. The staff were friendly, polite & helpful. There was a good variety of food on the menu at a very reasonable price. We will deffinately be using it again & will certainly be recommending it to others.

We were really disappointed that the hotel had no note of our booking when we arrived. We had to wait in the lobby for some 20-30 minutes with our luggage while they sorted this out. We only got to our rooms about 40 minutes after the check in time. We were then put in triple rooms with decor direct from the 1970s. The hotel really needs a makeover and it would have been good service, given the hotel mix up and our resultant delay, had they given us a nicer room or a drink while we waited. We would not return and may not book with Classic Britain again.
