enjoyed our stay at this lovely hotel. however, i would mention one matter. the front door of the hotel (ie the white pvc double door) is very badly scuffed and marked and makes for a very bad first impression of the hotel. a little Cif and some elbow grease would make a huge difference! otherwise, we could not fault the hotel and the staff certainly were very friendly. good value for money.

According to my great aunt, in the past the Crown & Mitre was a rather 'grand' hotel. Glimpses of this can still be seen but sadly it is slowly fading. The en-suite bedrooms are comfortable but the views from the rooms at the back of the hotel are depressing. Dividing walls between bedrooms are sometimes paper-thin. (One night I could hear the person next door on Skype. Not only could I hear him talking but I could also actually hear the person he was talking to replying!! Not good). If you are a light sleeper earplugs are a necessity! Staff are generally pleasant & professional - especially at breakfast time in the main restaurant. Reception staff are hard working but access to the reception area is awkward & too small if a group is checking in. Several times we were kept waiting whilst the staff were on the phone or attending to other jobs. On leaving the hotel there was no mention of "Did you enjoy your stay?" or "We look forward to welcoming you back." Taking evening dinner in the Peace & Plenty restaurant was somewhat claustrophobic due to poor lighting and no windows. The small swimming pool is a welcome addition. Space should be found to include a gym as well. The hotel is well sited in the centre of the city so very easy access to the shops - but sadly most of them close at 17.30 hrs. By 18.30 everywhere was quiet!! Overall it was a pleasant stay and value for money - but I wouldn't want to pay the 'front of house rack rates'!

Excellent value for money booking through this site. However: The food was canteen standard. . Shame because the staff were lovely, the room was well equipped and it is a grand old building.

The bedrooms are very clean and a good enough size (big enough to swing a cat in but no room for a great deal of luggage if you're like me ladies and try to take a whole wardrobe with you) sound proofing........it is totally inadequate, yes some guests didn't seem to care about noise level and the affect it would have on guests holidaying in the room next door, but come on, we all like to enjoy our holiday doing what ever floats our boat, therefore perhaps even a wee notice on the doors etc reminding guests to consider/respect other guests peace and quiet. but overall I did think most of the noise was down to the hotel cramming guests into rooms beside each other, surely the better option would be guests in every second room where the hotel is only running at half capacity.

We enjoyed our short break at Crown & Mitre Hotel Carlisle. We had a problem in that our room was in the annexe and extremely cold, however, this was quickly sorted out for us when we pointed the matter out to Reception staff. Two heaters were immediately placed in our rooms and this greatly improved the temperature. We were a little disappointed that the log fire in the foyer was never lit during our stay - especially as it features in adverts and promotional literature for the hotel. As the weather was extremely bitterly cold it would have been nice to come into a welcoming open fire. We enjoyed our breakfasts very much, plenty of choice and well cooked and served by very friendly and pleasant staff. We also enjoyed the two dinners we had although it seemed the menu never changed. Were glad we were not dining every night for a week - it would have been a bit limiting. Also on our two nights of dining in the Hotel the roast of the day was the same each night - pork - which also featured in other dishes offered in the menu. Portions were more than generous but food was served on cold plates and became cold very quickly whilst eating as the dining room was a rather cold and draughty room. On the plus side all of the staff we met during our stay were very willing to help and provided an excellent and friendly service and were excellent ambassadors for the Hotel.

We had never visited carlisle before and were pleasantly surprised with the place, The Crown and Mitre is very central. we had a great time at the Crown and Mitre, staff very helpful, food very good, we were upgraded to a small suite on arrival which was very nice, the welcome glass of wine was unexpected but well received. We will be returning and have recommended the place to our friends

This hotel is ideal for those without a car as it is 10 minutes walk away from the railway station in one direction and about the same distance from the bus station in the opposite direction. The hotel is of the older style with high ceilings and grand looking public areas. I can't comment on the rooms in the main building as our room was in a separate annexe which looked like it had been upgraded quite recently and was extremely comfortable. The meals were excellent with good sized portions and the staff were all smartly turned out, friendly and efficient at their jobs.

We were fortunate to have a room upgrade which started time away very positive, Staff were all very pleasant and helpfull. Food at breakfast and dinner were excellent for the money. At dinner on second evening a steak had to be returne d as it had not been bested for long enough repacement steak and professionalism of waitress was excellent. Would return again quite happily.

Decor a bit tired in places and the bedroom pretty chilly in the evenings - it was frosty outside - but the food was excellent and the staff all delightful. Would stay there again.

we thoroughly enjoyed our stay although the lift was out of commission most of the time and no hot water early one morning. we did have an issue with the service at dinner one of the evenings which meant we had to change our plans for the evening but we would still recommend the hotel and staff. the food was very good and plentiful. we would certainly return.

On arrival we were given room 240 which was on entry cold, dark and rather small, we asked for a change of room and subsequently given 302 which was a far superior room. It had been newly refurbished, a king size bed, dressing gowns and considerably larger leading to a much happier customer. As my reservation stated that I would be given the best room available why wasn't I allocated this room on arrival? The breakfast although comprehensive didn't meet with the same style as the nicely presented menu card. The food had obviously been on the kitchen hotplate for a while as the bacon was dry and stiff, egg was heatlamped dry and certainly not acceptable for the
