Great hotel in a lovely location. Secluded, but with easy access by car to Kendal and on to the Lake District. Room couldn't be faulted. Seeing the red squirrels a great bonus too.

Hotel very good value for money paid. Only negative point was the bedroom was very small for two people but as we were only staying for one night this was not too much of a problem

Shap Wells never disappoints. The hotel was warm throughout and immaculately clean throughout. The bedrooms roomy and comfortable. The breakfasts were fine but I do wish the bar and restaurant food was better. Just simple British food properly cooked and not overdone. The staff are local and always helpful. The location perfect and the rates reasonable which is why it is always busy but never feels crowded as the public areas are spacoius

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A warm welcome got our evening off to a good start. Very pleasant, clean room with a comfortable bed - what more could we ask. The evening meal was excellent with a good choice. And the breakfast was also delicious and plentiful. The grounds are beautiful and I was delighted to encounter some of the red squirrels. All the staff were very pleasant and professional, friendly without being over-familiar. All in all a great place to stay - I'm already looking forward to hopefully arranging another stay in the new year.

It was a very enjoyable break away, the staff were all nice and made us feel very welcome. The rooms were a nice size, clean and comfy. It was an affordable price to eat there as well.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff but in an utrusive way. We had a very relaxing break in spite of the fact that the hotel was very busy. The food was promptly served and very good value for money. However if you are looking for fine dining this is not the place for you.

We've stayed at shap wells several times now & will continue to do so. It's a good hotel in a good location. The lakes, the Yorkshire dales & Pennines are all within easy reach & just a bit further Gretna & Scottish Borders or Lancaster & blackpool. Shap wells is a nice hotel in a lovely setting. Some of it is a bit dated but still nice. Our room was quite small this time but compact & had everything we needed, just 1 small gripe was there wasn't a blind on the bathrm window & altho it was patterned glass it still didn't feel private. The staff were all friendly & polite & the food was good. All in all great value for money.

There are many things to like about the hotel: we saw the red squirrels; enjoyed the beautiful countryside and the location is very convenient. It mainly does coach trips and so was geared up for these. For example, the dinner was a carvery, and by 7:30, most of the choices had gone. The staff were friendly, but the hotel was perhaps understaffed- tables were not cleaned before we sat for dinner. Initially, we were billed incorrectly, but this was remedied. The room was clean and modern, but small and over the kitchen, so both too hot and too noisy. The food was of a good standard and generous with breakfast self-service. On our first night, when we arrived after 8:00, there was no vegetarian options left - but they made us a chip butty. So I can see why reviews are mixed. I think today, in large hotels, people expect a higher standard of service and attention.

Hotel is in a lovely location, quiet and peaceful. The reception staff dealt with my arrival with efficiency. The hotel was let down by the restaurant - both staff and food. The staff did not appear interested in providing a professional service and ignored our table on a number of occasions when plates were obviously ready to be collected. They did not appear to be any routine for them to follow. At breakfast you were shown to a table and then left to you own devices - on two mornings I had to go and ask a member of staff for hot drinks. Staff seemed more interested in dealing with the needs of three coach parties than other paying guests. On Saay night, the restaurant were overrun with staff. On Sunday they had all disappeared leaving one person to run the bar area, with I would estimate 150 guests. I along with others stood for 15 minutes waiting for someone to come and serve! The evening entertainment, although free, was pretty poor with out of key singers with poor jokes! Not a place I will be returning to and not one I will be recommending.

Lovely Hotel however let down with the lack of staff at breakfast and dinner. Entertainment would help guests enjoy their stay as there is nothing else to apart from sitting in the lounge due to location of hotel

Had wheelchair room which was suitably adapted. Food was superb with large portions. The Pork and Cider Pie was a triumph. All the staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful.

I had a rather disappointing stay at this hotel. The staff were hard to come by. The reception was rarely manned meaning you had to Ring the bell several times to get service. The bar also didn't have any staff on and had to go into the dining room to fetch someone. There were a couple of friendly staff: Ricky and Tomas that were great fun and the cleaner also greeted me in the hallway with a smile and held the door open. The room itself was ok. The bed felt really small but comfy. There was no folder in the room unlike what the card we were given on check in suggested. The mugs were tiny for our morning coffee in our room. The bathroom was clean though and the shower was powerful - the bath started to fill up! I was awoken each morning at 5.30 by somebody speaking very loudly outside as we were right above the entrance, which was less than ideal for a 2 night stay. Used glasses and plates were found everywhere and rarely tidied away so although the seating outside was nice, there was often glasses etc still on the tables. We ventured to the games room and found a Snooker table and ping pong table that both were ruined beyond playing. And the gym looked good and was unexpected. The scenery is lovely outside and we visited the Red Squirrel feeding station and the small waterfalls nearby, although there were many flies so we didn't reach too far. I personally wouldn't come back to this hotel unless a lot of work was put into it. We were almost overcharged as well as we left but my partner queried it and the extra charges were removed.

Great location. Food pretty decent. Shame visit was spoilt by fire alarm at 1:50 in the morning! That was a false alarm.

Just returned from our very relaxing weekend break at Shap Wells Hotel. The Hotel is set in a beautiful place, miles from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you are a lover of wildlife and birds then this is a place to go. Our room was large and comfy and clean. The staff helpful and always with a smile, even though they were being kept incredibly busy. Will certainly be back
