Nature reserve on site and excellent food. Had handicapped room which was superb and had all the things a wheelchair user requires.

Stayed at the Shap Wells Hotel from the 9th May until 12th May 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Hotel is a bit remote but if you are travelling there by coach or car this is not a problem. Entertainment was laid on each night. Our booking included a boat trip on Lake Windermere which was lovely.

Fantastic location with some nice walks to be had nearby. Breakfast was very nice and staff were very friendly. Room was little small for my liking but was clean and tidy. Overall a very pleasant weekend and we got to see the red squirrels along with pheasant and plenty of other birds.

This hotel was under staffed. The breakfast was a complete shambles. Waiting ages to be seated dirty pots on most tables our table not laid. Wait wait wAit for plates, glasses, bread to be put out. Our room had no hoer and on checking out said it was getting fixed, so why put customers in rooms like that. Bar staff great but again under staffed. This hotel could be so much better with more staff. It is in a lovely location.

Lovely stay at hotel but we were ripped off as far as the deal was concerned. We were supposed to get a boat cruise on Lake Windermere and hotel gave us a voucher for a steam train ride instead. Cost us £22.60 on the day for a cruise from Bowness to Lakeside to take up train offer. Rang hotel to complain and still waiting for the operations manager Robert to call me back!!

The hotel is in a beautiful location and just minutes from the M6 making a perfect stopover on a long trip. It's dog friendly and we had a nice room in the old bathouse which is just adjacent to the main hotel building. Lots of walking trails and yes we did see some red squirrels. The evening meal was a bit hit or miss and the staff although lovely were a bit stressed and seemed very busy. Overall a nice stay and we would go there again.

This hotel is set up to deal with coach trips of old folk. Stayed here with family, hotel a little tired and best location, but has red squirrels which is a mighty plus. We had booked on first day but got bumped an hour and half because of coach party so eat else where. Second day we were delayed to get tickets which were not given to us after 1/2 of fuss we were seated - restaurant packed with coach party and menu changed to calvery - very poor. The service was very very slow. Staff great just over worked and not enough - during breakfast and dinner we had to complain as we were left waiting - meal times were very long affair. No one cared not target customer

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel and will be back. Rooms clean and comfortable, excellent food, friendly and efficient service. Hotel is in a very good location for visiting the Lake District , the Eden Valley and is just off Junction 39 of M6. Very good value for a short break.

Shap Wells is a very special place. Walk out the door and you are in the wilds with easy walking. The hotel has spacious public rooms and wonderful stained glass. The bedrooms are large and well appointed. The food has improved but still helpings are too large! The staff are local and friendly and efficient. The hotel is extremely well run and all staff deserve credit.

Pleasantly surprised with the location and the greeting from the friendly female receptionist on arrival. Both breakfast and Dinner were very good, served up by the friendly and very efficient Tomasc. Barman was also very good. Although everything was clean and tidy it is a fact that the decor is dated and a bit tired but it did not detract from our two night stay. We have already decided to return later in the year.

Lovely hotel and surroundings, good food and plesent staff . We stayed in the bath house as we had our dog with us and our only complaint would be the water temperature if you wanted a bath and the fact that the shower kept cutting out

Enjoyed our stay in this countryside hotel and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a very relaxed atmosphere. Our room was good and it overlooked the river. We ate in the bar and the food was lovely. There was a lot of bird life around but unfortunately we did not see the red squirrels on this visit. Excellent value and we will definitely go back again.

Generally we had a pleasant stay but management need to get a grip on certain aspects of running the hotel. On Friday night there was a singer who could have been much improved by reducing the volume so as not to be heard throughout the whole building, and reducing the reverberation. On Saay we stayed for dinner. We ordered sparkling wine. When it arrived it was Sunday morning my wife tripped on a large ripple on the carpet adjacent to the breakfast buffet bar. There was no Wi-Fi on warm, placed in ice withouer in the bucket and took until we had finished our meal (11/2 hours) before it chilled. On Saay or Sunday despite the fact that it was advertised. We had virtually no phone service the entire weekend (EE).Saay evening was too quiet. There was no music of any description. Even piped music would improve the atmosphere. There are fireplaces which remained in-lit on a dreadful snowy/icy day. People just retired early. What an opportunity missed.

The hotel itself was fine. But on arrival it was obvious there was issues. As one or two of the staff where ignorant. And clearly there was something wrong. With behind the scenes shouting at each other and stern words exchanged. This was going on as we where booking in. The hotel employee who checked our booking didn't seem to know what he was doing and spent time searching for paperwork. The room was fine. But I felt let Downey the evening meal which although the table service was good the quality of the food was not with roast potatoes almost cold on arrival me. This leads on to the worst part of our stay. There was a Christmas party taking place during our stay this I think ment that the kitchen staff where probably stretched and hence why our food was poor. But worst o was the fact that from 2,30 am until around 4 am we where constantly being woken by loud shouting in the corridor outside our door and constant banging of doors. These where a result of the Christmas party guests. The hotel is advertised as a quiet retreat and we had looked forward to a pleasant night away but this was spoilt by the inconsiderate staff on arrival and other guests during the night. I don't usually leave reviews but I was not happy with this hotel break I am sorry to say.

We had a great 2 night stay at the Shap Wells hotel. From checking in to leaving we were made welcome and the staff were all pleasant. We stayed in room 20 on the first floor and it was a good enough size for our families needs, 1 double and a single. Only gripe with the room was the shower which was not hot or powerful enough but apart from that all was good. Our stay included breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was a self service buffet a selection of cereals, full english, toast, fruit, yoghurt, tea or coffee. All of which was enjoyable and filling. Our evening meal was a 3 course meal with a selection of starters, mains and desserts again all good. The hotel is situated just off the M6 motorway and a 20 min drive to Kendal and a further 10 min drive will take you to Lake Windermere. Thank you for a lovely midweek break and we would not hesitate to stay again especially at the price we paid.

We have just come back from a three day dinner bed and breakfast deal and it is a fab little place. It is out in the midst of nowhere but the food was great the bar was reasonably priced and the staff were very nice and friendly the room was lovely and clean just a really nice little place to go to and a great bargain.

Had a 2 night stay at the best western Shap wells hotel, although the location is something the hotel cant help its pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and still a good 40 mins drive into the lakes so if lots of driving is what you are after then get it booked. The hotel is old and tired in places the lounge area is nice with open fires, pretty much hotel geared for OAP trips. the toilets where what you would find in traditional old pubs that have never been modernised. The Room we were first given was like the size of a shoebox, I would probably dare say a prison cell would of had better sleeping facil. the bath was half the size of a normal bath I even wonder how older people manage to wash as the shower is the old type in the bath. We asked to be moved which they agreed to the room was slightly bigger but for me when you go away from home for 2 nights you expect to stay in a room that has the same or not better than what you have at home, this failed our expectations by a country mile. The first room the double bed was slightly bigger than a single. having this hotel as part of your gift breaks for 2 what a joke, we left after the first night.
