This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and we enjoyed our stay (despite the rain) The room was clean and there was little noise at night to disturb your sleep. Food in the restaurant was of good quality and our choices were very filling. Given the restaurant food quality I was disappointed to receive a poor breakfast on the 2nd morning, especially my fried egg, this was hard and all brown and burnt. This was noted to the waitress but no explanation was forthcoming. Granted the service was busy due to a wedding party but nevertheless it was a let down to standards

We had a good stay, all staff very good, deal was value for money. Main negative comment was that the hotel was chilly in the evening, had to request heating for the room on both nights, room a little tired and a few minor faults.

Friendly staff, clean and food lovely. Nice touch having a dog bed and two bowls in room on arrival, for our pooch. First time that's happened on many hotel breaks.

Enjoyed our overnight stay and received first class service from all staff. Hotel itself is looking a bit tired and carpets, decor etc could be doing with a refresh...but then we did get a really good price for our stay. Dinner was excellent and good value for money. Breakfast was pretty good too.

A comfortable & pleasant 3-night stay at the friendly family-run Gables Hotel, Gretna. Our ground floor room was quiet, comfortable and equipped with the necessary. Whilst the bathroom tiling is becoming a little worn, everything was spotless and the lighting (the bane of fancy modern hotel bathrooms) was good - i.e. you could see properly. Warm & friendly service from all staff was greatly appreciated. The food at the Gables is of a high standard: decent choice of two courses within the £18 per person allowance, but nothing to stop you ordering other options if you don't mind paying a bit extra. The same menu is served in both the dining room (intimate, white linen, candles) and the more informal lounge bar area. Breakfast is served in a pleasant room with white table linen, good choice and generous portions. Overall, a superior example of a smaller family-run hotel with a more personal touch. Located in pleasant tree-surrounded grounds at the western edge of the village of Gretna, the Gables is conveniently situated for the M74/M6 motorway, the Gateway Outlet Shopping Centre and scenic forays on both sides of the Border. Would certainly return in the near future.

I would rate this a 2 star. Lovely staff but oh dear the hotel needs a lot of TLC, especially the carpets! All glasswork on door etc was dirty and there was a very unpleasant smell. Sorry but a definite no no from me. ?

One night B&B. Room clean and tidy but let down by wear on headboard. Staff helpful and friendly. Less choice for breakfast than on previous visits.

Returned for our 16th Wedding Anniversary and we weren't disappointed! Purchased the dinner, b&b and prosecco option and it was brilliant value. A lovely clean and comfortable double room with king size bed, TV, tea and coffee facilities and full size bathroom with shower. Evening meal was superb and the allowance to towards the meal could cover a full meal depending on your choices. Breakfast fantastic - great range of help yourself choices incl cereals, croissants, toast, fruit, yogurt followed by the very tasty full Scottish breakfast. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. No complaints at all, we will definitely return in future.

Disappointed. Spent a night on a DBB deal with a bottle of prosseco on arrival. Our room was ready when we arrive at 1:30 so got in early which was good. Room was ok but full of cobwebs. Hardly any coffe/tea/sugar. Evening meal was terrible. Home made chips were burnt and gammon steak very dry. As the bottle was not in our room on arrival (was told it’s the last thing they put in the room)had to ask for it for dinner. Waitress was brilliant. Reception staff were lovely as well as the bar and waiting staff in the morning.

With a bit of money and tlc, this could be a top notch hotel. We received a warm welcome from the member of staff on reception and throughout our stay we found the staff to be pleasant. The room was tired with various marks on the walls and signs of wear and tear. Food was average - skin left on the battered fish, with the flesh of the fish being grey. Not how it should be. Best thing on the plate was the proper chips and desert was also very nice.

This was one of our favourite hotels that we used at least three times a year, we have been going for about 5 years so we have stayed a lot. We had booked a DBB deal and paid the whole bill for the two double rooms on arrival, where we were advised that the hotel had experienced a power cut that morning, we acknowledged that we had seen work along the road being completed on the lines. Power went down when we were due to go to dinner, we were sent along to another hotel for dinner and were expected to pay for dinner again...when I had already paid, after me reminding gables we were on deal. Eventually we went back along to gables where I was basically called a liar by staff member, although I had witnesses. We were told that there aid be no refund for dinner and that as compensation they may have offered lunch the next day. I was totally taken aback by the attitude of staff, no contingency plan was put into place and they were definitely not interested in guests. In our opinion the staff have changed and its definitely not run to the same high standard, training is sadly lacking in all areas as commented on by other guests too. This is a wee gem of a hotel sorry to see standards drop.
