Barony Castle Hotel Break. My wife and I had booked a two night stay at this hotel for the dates of 21-22/6/2021. We checked out after the first night. Our disappointment began when we saw our room. The room size was noticeable, immediately. We were supposed to have been given a double room ,our room was very small. There was only one chair in the room, one of us had to sit on the bed. On entering the room,a strong smell of paint filled the room. This was unacceptable , expecting guests to sleep in a room that had been recently painted. The bathroom had lots of paint marks on the floor , very unprofessional work. No attempt had been made to clean the marks ,or the floor. There were lots of small strips of tissue paper on the floor ,it hadn't been cleaned properly. The bathroom lamp had dead insects down inside the bowl. The window in the hotel room was filthy, more so on the outside. On the inside there was a lot of dust , and a dead moth. This area hadn't been cleaned recently. The carpet had many stains . We expected more from an upmarket hotel. We thought that we would go and enjoy our dinner ,and try not to think about the room. Our dinner reservation was for 19:45. We waited to be seated. There was an assistant at the entrance to the dining area, but she didn't look up from her papers. After we had waited for a few minutes, another employee appeared from the dining area. She also didn't acknowledge us. By this time ,other diners had started to queue behind us. The two employees had their heads down ,and were locked in a discussion about the tables. Eventually, the first employee looked up and told us that she would be with us " in a wee minute". I do not mind waiting ,but I do not like being ignored. At the outset ,if the first employee had acknowledged us ,and said that they were very busy, I would have accepted that. After some more minutes, the second employee,a waitress, led us to our table. I think that the time was now about 8 o'clock. After a few minutes, a bar waitress took our drinks order. She returned with our drinks and also brought a jug of water. It was only after the waitress had left , that we noticed that there was a foreign body floating in the jug.We waited for about ten minutes before we managed to get a waitress to change the water. The waitress who had led us to our table continued to take orders from other diners, some of whom were seated after us.At one point a different waitress came up to our table to ask us if we wanted the Dessert Menus. My wife informed her that we hadn't even had our food order taken yet.The waitress looked embarrassed ,and walked away. At about 8:30 ,the original waitress came to our table to take our order. She apologised for the delay ,informing us that they were very busy. I pointed out to her that other diners whom she had seated after us,had been served their main meals. We eventually got our food. The food was well prepared , even if the plate was sp. When we had finished our main course ,we faced another lengthy wait to request Dessert Menus. When we received our menus ,and had decided on our choices ,we couldn't get a waitress to take our order. Eventually our original waitress returned to the dining area, but she then engaged in conversation with diners at another table. After about ten minutes of waiting for her to return to take our order, I looked over to the table to see her still engaged in conversation. I said to my wife that I didn't want to make a scene. I left my seat and went to search for another waitress. I found another waitress and gave her our order. I also asked the waitress if there was a manager on duty. The waitress placed our order, and then located the manager and informed him that I wished to speak to him. When the manager came over ,I explained the cirstances to him.He was very apologetic and agreed that the situation was unacceptable. He asked me where our waitress was ,I informed him that she was still talking at the same table. I then returned to my seat ,and then observed the manager going up to the waitress and calling her away from the table. If I hadn't sought out another waitress ,we might still have been waiting for our Dessert order to be taken. The young manager was excellent ,he approached our table to apologise once again. He asked us if there was anything that he could do,which we appreciated. I thanked him and told him that we didn't expect preferential treatment ,we just hoped for fair treatment. He came over once again as we were getting ready to leave. He told us that he had deducted the cost of our two drinks from our bill. I thanked him for his gesture and for his professional and caring manner. I made one request to him , asking if he would arrange for us to check out a day early. We felt so dispirited ,we just wanted to leave as early as we could. He kindly agreed to arrange this for us. His professionalism was very much appreciated. P. Doran

This is a beautiful 16th century hotel set in a countryside location. There's a spacious conservatory to sit in as well as outdoor seating.Lounge furniture though is on the low side for me. The staff are all friendly and very helpful, in particular Luke and Liz. What lets it down for me is the cheap quality toilet paper in the rooms (false economy) and no box of tissues.

Hotel reply...

Dear Sandra, Thank you for your review of your recent stay with us here at Barony Castle. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and that Luke & Liz took great care of you. I am sorry to hear you didn't find the toilet paper to your liking. This is a luxury branded paper that we us in all of our rooms. With regards to not having a box of tissues, unfortunately this is one of the many extra items that we have had to remove due to the rules and regulations regarding the prevention of Covid-19. Hopefully these will be back in the rooms soon. Once again thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, John Boswell Front of House Manager

Not informed how to get pool towels for first swim. Had to complain about staff serving customers with masks below their noses. Also guests walking about not challenged for no mask and no lanyard stating exempt. 1 bar staff member rude advising ‘use the app to order as it’s quicker’. That was not the case as waited 25 minutes for the drink. Clearly couldn’t be bothered taking order whereas other staff happy to take orders for drinks.

Hotel reply...

Dear Mr Wake, Thank you for your recent review of your stay with us here at Barony Castle. I am sorry you felt as if you had to complain about the use of masks in the hotel. The rules for wearing masks are made mandatory for all guests and staff in the public areas, we do politely ask guests to ensure these are being worn in all areas but do rely on guests to ensure they are following the rules themselves. Sorry that you had to wait so long for your drink, were possible we do ask guests to try and use our new Barony App. This helps keep contact to a minimum and helps us with social distancing measures. Hopefully we will see you again soon. Kind regards, John Boswell Front of House Manager

A very demanding and difficult time for the hard working staff who were exceptionally polite and pleasant.I think it would be fair to say that the hotel has to address the issue of no customers allowed i to offer from the bar as not sufficient to man tables especially when outside are is busy. Service in this area very poor.

Nice looking place.but our night away was a mare! We had a bampot couple next door going at it swearing shouting fighting..and you can hear everything with these walls..they left.or were chucked out. Fire alarm went off at 5 am out in car park for about an hour like a frozen snotter!! Claimed it was a bit of dust etc in detector.....but 3.30am people were smoking and not just cigarettes. Smell through corridor..granted not hotels fault but c'mon to christ..it's not on and caused a scene that could have been prevented .breakfast was best bit.

Hotel reply...

Dear Mr Piaget, Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us here at Barony Castle. I am sorry to hear of the noise issues you experienced during your stay. Our nights team were aware of this situation and intervened. With regards to the fire alarm, unfortunately this is something that is out of our control, the alarm system and evacuation procedures are in place in case of an emergency. We hope to be able to welcome you back again soon. Kind regards, John

The room and bathroom were very basic. Was disappointed to be charged for table cover on top of the drinks we ordered as room service. No discount or apology for the idiots who got everyone evacuated at 5am for an hour for smoking in their room.

Had a lovely break. With the new measures in place we felt very safe. As always staff very friendly. We booked half board and the meals in the restaurant were fantastic. Breakfast used to be buffet style but has changed due to covid 19 both my husband and I preferred it this way. We have stayed at the barony on several occasions and I wouldn't hesitate in going back.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Reception staff and bar staff were all fantastic. After a room change the room was great and the food was amazing in the bar. Didn’t eat in the restaurant apart from breakfast. Lovely sausages ! (and the scones were to die for in the bar) Beautiful grounds but didn’t explore far as weather was awful but hotel facilities more than made up for that. Can’t wait to visit again.

Fantastic accommodation, clean, warm welcome from all the staff and in a beautiful location. Our room was very spacious however there was no place for me to do my hair/make up routine as there was no mirror at the dressing table and the TV was sat where I feel the mirror should have been - this honestly would be my only thing that I would feedback. There was wonderful views and surrounds and the food from the restaurant was perfect, right amount of time between courses and restaurant staff were very attentive. All in all - lovely relaxing night away and we plan to be back soon!

Another extremely enjoyable stay to celebrate my wife's Birthday. We were accompanied by a couple of friends and the feel good factor from when we arrived until we checked out was great. The staff really made our stay all the more special as they are all so friendly and made sure that everything was done to make us welcome.

My wife & I stayed at the hotel on 4th/5th December & would like to thank you & your staff for making our stay nice & comfortable. Check in at reception was easy & the lady at the desk, friendly, chatty & explained about the facilities of the hotel. The staff were very friendly& helpful when needed information. The room we were allocated (209) was modern, clean, tidy & made the stay better with the comfortable bed.The housekeeping staff also friendly with a smile & a hello whenever we passed any of them during our walk about the hotel. Bar area very nice too & the staff here well presented & courteous too. We ate in the Blue Dug bar & the meals were very good too. Breakfast was also very good with the servings & taste impressive & again staff were well presented & courteous as well. Unfortunately the weather kept us from walking around the 25 acres of land there, but we did manage to visit the Polish made Scotland Map, which was so worth seeing. Facilities within the hotel are excellent & all of the team there should be proud of where they work. Once again thank you & hopefully we will stay there again, maybe when the weather is nice & sunny. Robert McPherson.

Happy to stay again at the barony. Wee bit disappointed to be offered only two times for dinner - 7.00 (too early) and 9.00 (too late) - opted for 7.00 and then ate dinner in an empty dining room, with only 3 tables in use throughout our meal - leftvthe restaurant at 9.00 - poor show. Otherwise everything was as anticipated.

Our stay at the Barony Castle was to celebrate my wife’s 70th birthday whilst catching up with family members in Peebles, just 4 miles away. Prior to arrival I did phone reception to ask if possible they allocate us a nice standard double room. As the receptionist couldn’t give us a free upgrade to a Prestige Room I took the option of adding the dressing gowns, slippers and soft drinks package at £15 per night. As the hotel had been very busy we were unable to check in till 3 pm but it was worth the wait as we found we had been upgraded to a Prestige Room as a treat for our celebration. This was a very nice surprise and the room was lovely. Throughout our stay we could not fault any of the hotel staff whether reception, bar, restaurant or domestic. They were all very pleasant, cheerful and helpful. The bar area is comfortable with a reasonable choice of menu at reasonable prices. We did not use the main restaurant in the evening but the menu appeared comprehensive plus reasonably priced. Breakfast was buffet with ample choices. We would definitely consider a return visit and give a very favourable recommendation.
