We had a lovely 3 night stay at shap wells. The hotel has a nice relaxing atmosphere & is warm & clean with friendly staff. Our room had everything we needed. It had good lighting & a plug socket near a mirror, which so often is not the case! The bathroom was a little small & the shower was a little slow but it was nice & hot & kept a steady temperature so not a problem. We ate in the restaurant every night & the food was delicious & good value. The position of the hotel is perfect, it's in a lovely setting but only 10mins from the m6 so there's easy access to Carlisle,Scotland ,eden valley aswell as the beautiful lakes. We stayed here a couple of years ago & had the same experience so we will definitely stay again.

Our third stay at the Shap Wells and its great location. We enjoyed a lovely weekend here for our wedding anniversary on a DBB tariff, couldn't fault the service, room good, clean and didn't hear a thing even when a wedding party was going on on the Friday night. We decided to opt for a Bar meal instead of the DBB on the first night, but sadly couldn't recommend the reheated berland Sausage and lumpy mash though. Will visit this hotel again at some point in the future and its unique location for visiting the Lakes

Hotel was lovely, spotless but a bit dated. It looks as though they are upgrading as our rooms bathroom looked new and very modern in comparison. Staff were all friendly, no complaints. It does sit out in the middle of nowhere so not much to do if your going for longer that 1 night, other than make some walking.

The hotel and room was not a bad standard for what we paid for our break. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful through our stay. However the restaurant food and service was not good at all and lacked any sort of organisation. The first night was not too bad but this was because it was a buffet carvery and you helped yourself to all the three courses. On the second night which was the normal waiter service, we ordered our selection for first and second courses. We tried to order our drinks at the same time but the waiter said he would return shortly to do so but after 15 minute wait we had to ask another waiter to get us some drinks. After another 30 minutes wait we complained to another waiter that we had not received our first course yet and he said he would check with the kitchen. After some frantic running round he came back and told us the first waiter had forgotten to put in our order and not only that he had lost the order slip. We then had to re-order our food which at this time was close to the finish of service. We had ordered roast turkey for main course which when we received it the quality was not good. It was obvious that there was not enough and the chef was trying to stretch it out as there was very little white breast meat and more grey meat added. We then tried to order a mousse for dessert but were told by the waiter that he recommend we did not as the quality was not good!!! We therefore ordered a crumble and the quality of that was not any better as it was very doughy and the custard was nearer white than yellow. There were a lot of people around us complaining of the lack of service and quality of food.

Super value deal. Nice hotel with friendly staff who were helpful when assistance was requested. Food was acceptable but nothing special. Large hotel that catered for 2 large coach parties whilst we were staying as a group of 4 however they coped well and there was no interference to our stay - so well done there. Ideally suited to breaking a long journey as 5 minutes from the M6 however if travelling to 'The Lakes' they are some 20 - 40 minutes+ away dependent on location e.g. South or North Lakes. Overall though a good visit for the money paid - well done.

Room score was 8 due to the heat from radiator pipes along the wall and the noise from air conditioning units just outside. New bathroom was fantastic. Expected more selection of non-cooked breakfast items. Ps husband gives the baked beans 10. Very good dinner each night with many choices. Welcome drink was a lovely surprise.

This was our second visit to this comfortable hotel on the edge of the Lake District (the location is remote - a car is strongly recommended). For value for money, you could not fault it. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and the food was good. However, on this occasion, we were badly let down by the appalling standard of service in the restaurant, both at breakfast and dinner. Just one example was on the last evening when my wife and I ordered soup for our starter. This was served promptly, but we were not offered any bread. When I asked for some, I was told it was being cooked, and that they would be back with in a minute. 10 minutes later, we still had no bread, so we asked for it again. This time they brought some (but no butter even though they had some on the adjacent table) and of course, by then, the soup was only tepid. But we were not offered a new, hot bowl of soup, so we ate it luke warm. We tolerated it because we do not like complaining in public and because generally, the food when we got it was good. Other diners were not so accommodating. On the last evening, two couples on nearby tables were complaining vociferously, and one of them, when their food eventually arrived, told the waiter to take it away again and got up and walked out. Also, if you want a good night's sleep and are still in possession of your hearing, make sure they don't put you in room 110! The kitchen extract fan is right outside the window and when it switched on at about 5:30 am, we were rudely awoken by the din. When we raised this with the management, we were not even offered an apology for our disturbed night, but they did manage to find us another room which was not so badly affected by the noise.

The room, although we had a pet with us was very very small and the shower was dreadful. The staff were not knowledgeable and unhelpful. This hotel obviously caters for large coach parties and this is reflected, unfortunately in their food. We have stayed at many hotels with our dog and never complained. The food was terrible, breakfast buffet was cold/Luke warm and staff had to be asked to bring our tea/coffee. This should be advertised as a coaching hotel. In have booked hotels through this website many times and never been disappointed until now. Will not be back

Had a very enjoyable 3 nights at this hotel. The rooms were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff at this hotel are very pleasant and very obliging. The food is good and there is plenty to choose from. The breakfast is buffet style and was also very good. There are nice walks around the hotel and a lovely place to see the red squirrels. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

Absolutely beautiful location.Red squirrel sanctuary amazing! We booked a dog friendly room and got a perfectly adequate room in The Bath House. We were there on a BB basis but tried the bar food on one night of our stay. The chicken Caesar salad was delicious but the portion was small to say the least. My husband's curry was exceptionally bland and tasted like a cheap boil in the bag.His portion was also lacking although the prices were not. The breakfasts were good and plentiful and the staff very pleasant and helpful.I would recommend this hotel especially if you have your furry canine friend with you. Simply stunning!:-)

Great location. Superb food. Lovely room. Really enjoyed our overnight stay. One small criticism, the room was a bit too warm and there was no heating control. Otherwise fantastic, thanks.

We recently stayed at the Shap Well hotel with friends for a quiet and relaxing weekend or so we thought. On checking into our rooms we discovered that the room was extremely dusty , so much so that the welcome book left a visible space on the dressing table on picking it up . Before our evening meal we made use of the games room which is a great addition but is unfortunately full of broken equipment which was very disappointing . Trying to play snooker or pool with broken cues isn't ideal or inviting. We had our evening meal which was pleasant but again there was issues with the quality of our friends meal which had to be sent back. After our meal we sat in the hotel bar for drinks which was very busy due to a wedding and 2 coach parties. At one point we waited over 20 minutes to be served as the bar was understaffed with only one member of staff working, in which he struggled to understand our orders as he didn't seem to speak much English, he also charged a different amount each time which we had to challenge as our drinks were the same every time . A fight broke between the wedding party which made us all very uncomfortable as we were caught in the middle of it , being jostled around and having obscen screamed at us was desperately worrying as we felt under threat of being attacked . Luckily the police arrived but we were treated as if it had been us in wrong by the manager as he closed the bar down and was extremely rude to us customers telling us to leave the area . This left us with no choice but to retire to our rooms . The room was uncomfortably warm by this time even with the windows open , in which we had to leave open all night during sleeping as we didn't feel we could broach this with the hotel staff after the evenings events. The breakfast was good but the service was very slow , having to ask for tea and coffee on several occasions. We certainly wouldn't return or recommend this hotel to anyone
