Otterburn is a small village in Northumberland, 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Newcastle Upon Tyne on the banks of the River Rede, The village takes its name from the Otter Burn, that flows through the village. Otterburn lies within the Cheviot Hills about 16 miles (26 km) from the Scottish borders.
Otterburn was the site of one of the many major battles between the English and Scottish armies. The battle took place in 1388 and saw Sir Henry Percy taken captive. This is the subject of the English ballad Chevy Chase and the Scots ballad Otterburn.
Otterburn is not far from famous attractions like Hadrian's Wall, Holy Island, Wallington Hall and Cragside House. The Great Kielder Forest and reservoir, with the accent on sport and adventure are only 10 miles away.
