Hathersage
Hathersage is a picturesque, vibrant village known for its connections to Charlotte Brontë, who drew inspiration from the area while writing Jane Eyre. The village is also steeped in the legend of Robin Hood, with Little John said to be buried in the churchyard of St. Michael’s.
To the north of Stanage Edge, you’ll find an outdoor swimming pool, built in the 1930s, which remains a year-round favourite for locals and visitors alike.
Stanage Edge itself is a popular destination for both walkers and rock climbers. This iconic gritstone ridge stretches for four miles and gained fame as the dramatic backdrop in the windswept scenes of Pride & Prejudice.
Bakewell
A must-visit destination and the birthplace of the famous Bakewell Pudding, this charming town is brimming with shops and cafes. Enjoy fish and chips by the river, or stop by the Original Bakewell Pudding Shop to create your very own pudding!
Every Monday, you can also experience the local culture by joining residents for the weekly cattle and sheep auction.
Edale
A hiker’s paradise with peaceful, scenic trails in every direction, Kinder Scout stands as the highest point in the Peak District at 2,087 feet. On April 24th, 1932, a group of peaceful protesters organized the ‘Mass Trespass’ across private land on Kinder Scout, drawing attention to the restrictions on walking in open countryside.
This pivotal event led to the introduction of legislation granting public access to open land across the UK, and it also played a key role in the creation of National Parks, with the Peak District being the first. Edale, located nearby, marks the start of the famous Pennine Way, often called ‘The Backbone of Britain.’ This iconic long-distance trail stretches 268 miles from Edale to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border.
