Things to see & do in Motherwell
Motherwell is a town in north Lanarkshire, approximately 12 miles south east of Glasgow. The town sits across the River Clyde and Strathclyde Park from Hamilton
The name is believed to refer to one of three wells in the original farming community known as the Well of Our Lady - an area of the town is still known as Ladywell.
The town was built on the weaving, coal and steel industries. Motherwell was noted as the steel production capital of Scotland, nicknamed Steelopolis, with its skyline dominated by the water tower and three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steelworks which closed in 1992. The growth and decline of the town are explored at Motherwell Heritage Centre.
Motherwell's greatest attractions are Strathclyde Country Park, the Strathclyde Watersport Centre and the vast M&D's Scotland's largest theme Park, with an excellent choice of thrill rides and indoor leisure pursuits.
