The picturesque town of Melrose has a rich history and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited village in Scotland.

The magnificent grand ruins of Melrose Abbey dates from 1136. A casket believed to contain the heart of Robert the Bruce was discovered in 1996 by Historic Scotland archaeologists. The casket containing the heart was buried again during a private ceremony at Melrose Abbey on 22 June 1998.

Rugby fans will know that Melrose is the birthplace of Rugby Sevens and also has a rugby union team, Melrose RFC.

There are two beautiful gardens worth a visit in the area. Both properties and ran by the National Trust for Scotland. Priorwood has an apple orchard which cultivates many historic varieties and Scotland’s only dedicated dried flower garden; Harmony Gardens is a beautiful walled garden with magnificent views over the abbey and Eildon Hills.
