Throughout my professional career, it has been necessary for me to spend time away from home, and thus stay in hotels in all areas of the UK. Sadly, my recent stay at Shrigley Hall Hotel was the worst experience that I have ever had, both in terms of the reasons which caused my need to complain, i.e. abysmally poor hygiene, together with the overall uninhabitability of the rooms, due to a window that would not stay closed (on what was described as the coldest night of the year so far), dirty, stained furniture, mould on curtains, and clusters of insects on the inside of the window frame. My complaint was dealt with appallingly by the incompetent management, who trivialised my concerns, and seemed to think that they were playing a game which involved the avoidance of responsibility for their negligence and extremely poor standards. It is definitely a hotel that I would not wish to visit again, and would not recommend it to others either.

Our room was on the 2nd floor, and it was a large room, with a great bed, and quality bathroom. This room was far better than those on the 1st floor

The condition of our room (160) fell well short of what one reasonably would expect - some issues breaching reasonable standards of cleanliness + hygiene and maintenance. The room smelled strongly of dogs on arrival, an odour which persisted throughout the stay. Floors in both the bedroom and the bathroom were visibly dirty. There was mould on the bathroom ceiling and shower tiles. The toilet rim was cracked and the sink stained. Lighting was grossly insufficient: only two down-lights plus mirror light (all on one side of the room) and bedside lights. One of the bedside-light bulbs was not working. The paint is peeling from walls and the window missing net curtains. Storage was minimal: an old pine musty-smelling hanging wardrobe missing one handle and a tin table with two small drawers

Lots of stairs to negotiate leading to our room on the second floor which turned out to be very small and overlooking roofs with noisy fans. It certainly needed a little tlc and not what was expected from the photos on their website. The staff however were excellent and the food was very good.

I love this hotel. It has a distinct character and unique personality. The rooms are cosy, the food is good and the setting is stunning, with wonderful views.

Views and all staff friendly, helpful and knew what they were doing. Evening meal very good. Breakfast was OK but not outstanding - more fruit options and additions to cereals would have been preferred. Only one type of gluten free cereal available. We had a dog in a standard twin room which was clean, well maintained (apart from the wardrobe) but a bit basic. No shelves or drawers to put clothes.

Arrival Well signposted and easy to find, nice waterfall view at entrance, good indicator to the reception area. Some very steep stairs en-route to reception but managed them, there are lifts but being new to the hotel we did not know any other way. Possibly some signs stating "Reception avoiding steep stairs" required? Lady on reception desk was very friendly and helpful - had up on the way to our room within 5 minutes. Room The room was a good size and looked clean, some signs of obvious repairs and changes were visible but not show stoppers by any means, a large cobweb in one corner near bathroom had been missed. Bath tap would not work and a very affable chap from the hotel maintenance staff we asked had a quick look and thought the selector tap at the top had been installed incorrectly. A little spot or two of what looked like mould on the ceiling. Hand soap bottle was near empty. There was some debris from previous guests under bed, including fake reddish petals and white ribbons. Food & Drink The food was I think a little better than average for such an establishment, though presentation was pretty basic. Service was very good in restaurant, but at the bar there were some fairly lengthy delays waiting for attendance in the afternoons. Thought the drinks a little expensive in terms of wine, though the prices for some other drinks were more reasonable. Hotel Environment We liked the historical details regarding the history of the hotel and the paintings and decor generally, though there did seem to be a fair bit of furniture that didn't have a home and was in corridors. The aforementioned maintenance chap we met was very knowledgeable about the hall and its history and my wife in particular was delighted to learn a little more than was readily available. Amenities & Grounds We were unable to use the spa, my bad as I thought it was complimentary as a few recent stays have been. The grounds are beautifully kept, we walked in the woods, avoiding the golf areas which are off limits to non-golfers and loved it. A few more local woods walks would not go amiss, though I did read the details o-site walks, shame we had not brought our walking boots! Overall Enjoyed our stay and we would probably stay again, though we want to explore other areas of the UK so it may be a while before we would return.

Brilliant hotel with a massive car park and lots of rooms. Seen a massive outdoor hot tub when walking down to reception but as we were late arriving we were unable to use the spa facilities, but maybe next time. Room was nice, clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and also very quick at serving and clearing up, food was excellent and the dinning area was large spacious and bright. Breakfast was also very good, probably the best breakfast I had whilst on our trip. Will definitely be back again if in the area.

Overpriced drinks at the bar, soup was tasteless as was the meatball starter which was also cold. woken up early by dogs barking. inconsiderate people talking loudly when passing through corriders on way to breakfast while people might be trying to have a lie in.

We had a great time at Shrigley Hall, the hotel was everything we could wish for. Comfortable, clean, the staff very helpful, and the food was very good for a large hotel. We will be looking to book to go back at some point.

Large busy hotel. Large car park which was great as I had a large van and 16ft trailer… Easy check in process from friendly staff. Room was clean and tidy, free water, tea coffee and biscuits. Had an evening meal booked and I must admit as there was a large wedding party in for dinning and a lot of other residents in I wasn’t expecting a great service, how wrong was I… Food was very quick to arrive for both starters and mains and was very nice, couldn’t fault the service or food at all. Bed was large and comfy and room was quite warm so the ceiling fan was a bonus. Breakfast in the morning was again to a very high quality for a buffet and all food was nice and hot. My only issue was the water supply in the room, low pressure and just warm, not hot but just warm..not a complaint really on a hot day but later in the year I wouldn’t be impressed. So apart from the water issue I would say for such a large hotel and a large amount of guests this was a very enjoyable stay with excellent service and food.. If ever in the area again I would stay here again.

A great weekend break with nice rooms and a lovely afternoon tea served by attentive staff. The evening food was excellent in the restaurant however very slow drinks service. This was acknowledged by the hardworking and friendly restaurant manager who was apologetic and rectified the matter. Will be looking to return

The rooms were very clean and well stocked but quite dated. The food was excellent and the staff were really friendly and efficient, a credit to the Hotel. Our only complaint would be the cost of drinks which were unreasonably high.

Very friendly and efficient book in and told where our room was. The room 104 was on the side facing the spa building with an air conditioning motor unit opposite our window which was a little noisy all the time, day and night. We didn't mind we had no view but the room should have double glazing, even with secondary glazing, to lower the noise. Another small point was that there was no biscuits with the tea and coffee which I thought was to do with covid. We did mention that on leaving and the staff apologized as they forgot to put them in our room. The staff, in all aspects of the hotel, were very friendly and the food was great. I think the hotel could have charged a smaller amount to use the swimming pool alone as to pay £28.00 for the spa facilities was too high just to have a swim. All in all though we had a nice experience and we will be booking again through you for January at Linden Hall hotel in Northumberland.
